Setting Up Telegram

We use Telegram for our membership and group communications. We’ve found it to be a valuable platform, but it's crucial that we all use it securely and with privacy in mind.

If you don’t already have a Telegram account, please take a moment to download the app and create one. It’s available on iOS, MacOSAndroid and PC/Linux.

To ensure the highest level of privacy and discretion for all members, we've compiled a few key suggestions from fellow members regarding the account setup process:

Phone Number:

  • A valid telephone number is required for Telegram. If you prefer not to use your personal number, we strongly recommend using a virtual number service.
  • Consider using apps such as Google Voice, TextNow, or Burner. These services provide you with a virtual number that can receive calls and text messages, adding a layer of privacy and separation from your personal contact information.

Contact Access, Data Sharing, and Privacy:

  • During the setup process, it is critical that you limit information sharing.
  • Do NOT allow Telegram access to your contacts unless you are certain you want to. It’s best to avoid sharing any data from your phone with the app besides photos.
  • Carefully review all the privacy settings tabs. Change all relevant settings to either "contacts only" or "nobody can see." This will help minimize the information shared with both Telegram and other users.
  • Most importantly, ensure that your phone number is set to "nobody can see" within the privacy settings. This is especially important for our members who wish to maintain a higher level of discretion.

We use Telegram for all group communications and member updates. It’s private, flexible, and works on any device.

Why Telegram?

  • Telegram lets us connect securely as a community while keeping members’ privacy a priority. It’s available on iOS, Android, MacOS, and PC/Linux. If you haven’t used it before, setup is quick and free.

How to Get Started

  1. Download Telegram: iOS | MacOS | Android | PC/Linux.
  2. Create Your Account: You’ll need a phone number for registration. If you want to keep your personal number private, use a virtual number service like Google Voice, TextNow, or Burner. These apps provide you with a separate number for calls and texts.
  3. Adjust Your Privacy Settings:
  • When prompted, you can skip uploading your contacts.
  • In Telegram’s settings, you can control who sees your phone number, profile photo, and last seen status.
  • For maximum privacy, set your phone number to “Nobody” or “My Contacts.”

Privacy Tips

  • Virtual Numbers: Using a virtual number adds a layer of separation between your personal info and your Telegram account.
  • Data Sharing: Telegram gives you control over what you share. Take a minute to review privacy options after signing up.

Responsible Use

  • Please remember to use Telegram respectfully and responsibly. Be mindful of what you share, treat fellow members with courtesy, and help us maintain a safe, welcoming environment for everyone.
